Golden Valley Harriers

GVH is a running club located in Davis, CA dedicated to promoting running in the community. Members come in all shapes and sizes—from elite ex-college runners to folks who are just starting to run and everything in between.  The club is organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  Donations to the club are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.  Our Tax ID# is 14-1841731.

Everyone and anyone is welcome to come out and run with us, but we appreciate a positive attitude. (Please note that our RRCA insurance requires that runners under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.)

GVH currently meets for workouts Saturday mornings at 8 am at Fleet Feet Sports, 615 2nd Street, Davis, CA (Map, Fleet Feet website). Tuesday group runs meet at 5:45 pm at the location of the workout identified in the weekly e-mail message sent out by Craighton.  Thursdays group runs meet at 5:55 pm at Central Park (corner of 3rd and C).  An informal group in GVH meets at the UC Davis track on Thursday mornings at 8 am.  For more details, see the weekly e-mail message sent out by Angie, or go to the Workouts and Events page.

GVH donated $525 to each XC team at Woodland HS and Pioneer HS as part of our 2023 program to support local running programs. The coaches came to our Saturday morning run to express thanks and tell us how the donations have been used. Last year, Alex, the Woodland coach, used the 2022 donation to buy a pop-up tent with the school logo which is wildly popular with the XC and track team.

2023 Fall Fundraising Drive

We have the opportunity to get a 4 to 1 matching donation up to a maximun of $5,000. If we raise $1,000, the anonymous donor will match $4,000. The anonymous donor is not a member of the club. These donations are critical to keeping our dues low and decreasing the barriers to participation.

You can donate via the link at the bottom of this web page.

We raised $1,000 of the $1,000 in less than one day. Thanks to all those who donated.

2/11/2024 Hello Golden Valley Harriers!

 Hello Golden Valley Harriers (GVH)!

I hear that Taylor Swift made it to the Super Bowl.  PHEW.  Now the Swifties, ummm I mean Chiefs, have a chance!

Fortunately for us, regardless of today’s Swift Bowl, (ooops! Super Bowl) outcome, the first quarter 2024 GVH board meeting will occur tomorrow (Monday, February 12th) from 6:30 to 8pm at Steve’s Pizza in Downtown Davis.  Please find the agenda attached.

Davis Stampede

FREE MONEY (well, a race discount)

Wark Goltz obtained a discount code for GVH runners who’d like to race the Dublin Shamrock 5k.  A few of us ran last year and had a good time.  The race is Sunday, March 17 (St Patrick’s Day).  Race details are at this website:

https://dublin.ca.gov/867/Shamrock-5K-Fun-Run-Walk

The discount is only $2, but every little bit helps .   The discount code is: HARRIERS.

AND, a reminder, thanks to GVH-er Ernie Shimizu who worked with A Change of Pace and got GVH members a 15% discount for Davis Stampede registration.  That discount code is: GVHDS

It’s Western States time! (see below for the message from this year’s co-captains Ling and Aryn)

It’s time to ask for volunteers to help staff the Cal 1 aid station at this year's Western States 100-mile run (June 29-30, 2024).

First, I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Bruce La Belle who served as the Cal 1 co-captain since 2014. This year, we are excited to introduce Aryn Yancher as the new co-captain.

GVH hosts the Cal 1 aid station which sits 65.7 miles into the runners' journey from Olympic Valley to Auburn.  Lead runners come through our aid station ~2:30pm and runners continue to come through until the early hours of the morning ~1:00 am.

We have a limited amount of space and have both runners and pacers coming through so efficiency is key.  Due to a finite number of volunteer jobs and limited space, we cap each shift at 9-10 volunteers.  We take volunteers on a first come first serve basis in terms of shift preference and overall volunteers.  But we like to have 2-3 extra people for each shift “on hold” because inevitably, several people who initially volunteer are no longer able to help come race weekend.

We will have two shifts.  The times will be approximately 11:30-7:30pm and 7:00pm-2am. If you work the early shift, you will see the front runners come through; but in general, this shift is slower. If you work the late shift, you’ll see ordinary people doing an extraordinary thing. Both are fun and pretty inspiring!

If you would like to volunteer for the Western States aid station team, please email Ling-ru Chu (lingchu115@gmail.com) and Aryn Yancher (aryn.yancher@gmail.com) the following:

1. Your shift preference (early or late)

2. Unisex shirt size (S, M, L, XL)

3. If you have a 4WD high clearance vehicle that you would be willing to drive down. Note: we are trying to improve the conditions of the access road.

A note to those GVH members who are interested in running Western States in 2025.  GVH is awarded one entry in return for hosting an aid station.  The GVH selection criteria to award the WS Designated Runner slot is available on the GVH website: (http://www.goldenvalleyharriers.org/western-states-aid-station). Note the “Important Dates” are outdated, but the Selection Criteria remain the same.

Spotlight on a “Local (Running) Hero”

And a shout out to Davis, CA native and Davis High School alumna, Fiona O’Keeffe who won the USA Track & Field Women’s Olympic Marathon qualifying race in record setting time sealing her status as a USA Olympian!  What an amazing performance!  If that doesn't motivate you to lace up your jogging shoes and hit the Davis greenbelt, I don't know what will!  I’ll add to the coverage being shared on the GVH listserv with a local news source: https://www.kcra.com/article/davis-fiona-okeeffe-smashes-womens-us-olympic-trials-record-in-marathon-debut-paris-olympics/46633231 and reiterate the message from Steve Barton, the Peacock streaming service has a recording of the NBC broadcast coverage from Saturday.  A friend of mine who has raced in five US Olympic Marathon trials she said it was an amazing final finish to watch!
