Fellow Runners,

Jim Flanigan ran the last "real" race back in March before the wave of coronavirus race cancellations and virtualizations began. He is now the first to return to official racing. Held in the forested foothills above Chico on June 6, the Loco Go Big or Go Home trail race saw over one hundred finishers in six different distances, including a 100-mile course. Participants and volunteers had to agree to a stringent set of infection-control guidelines, including the wearing of an official race buff over the nose and mouth while near other participants. You can read the complete guidelines here:

We will see if this becomes the new normal for races in 2020. Jim won his age group in the half marathon.

In virtual racing news, Jen Schmidt took a crack at the Quarantine Backyard Ultra on Saturday, in which she ran nine 4.2-mile laps every hour on the hour. A number of GVHers came to join her (socially distanced, naturally) for a lap or two. Tommy Vargas, Domenick DeMatteo, Zach Bonner, Steve Andrews, and Kat and Brendan Ward all made guest appearances. Over $500 was raised for local racial justice organizations as she racked up a total of 37.8 miles.

On Sunday, nine men held an unofficial 5K time trial at the UC Davis track. Two of the finishers happened to be GVH members: Jose Zaragoza and Steve Andrews each took home a PR.
