Fellow Runners,

Mark Murray submitted the following report on a 5K time trial on Saturday:

It was a battle for I-80 bragging rights on Saturday as runners from as far west as San Francisco and Vacaville, and as far east as Reno and Roseville, gathered on the track at Rio Americano High School. GVH/Davis were well represented, with 7 runners.

The race was led from start to finish by indoor marathon world record holder Malcolm Richards (San Francisco), who finished in 14:58. His PB is 14:36; Saturday's effort was aimed at pacing collegiate freshman Danny Hernandez (Vacaville/CSU Chico), to his first sub 15. Hernandez managed a PR, but fell a smidge short in 15:00.5.

Top Davis finisher (and soon to be GVHer??) was Mason Tope, who finished 5th overall in 15:45. That's a 14 second improvement over his 1st place finish two weeks ago at the GVH Blue Moon Classic. Other GVH finishers were Zach Bonner in 16:10, Ben Godfrey in 16:15, and Mark Murray in 17:43.

In the women's race, Vacaville HS's Hailey Wurzbach outkicked Jillian Brown of Davis, finishing 19:45 and 19:48 respectively.

In the 'Fastest Town on I-80' team race, Sacramento (47:08), led by Reed Breuer in 15:29, narrowly edged Vacaville (47:13), with a Davis team of Tope, Devan Becker (UCD TC), and Bonner finishing 3rd in 47:58. Fans could only speculate on 'what might have been', as Davis Olympic Marathon Trials qualifiers Brendan Gregg and Nathan Kwan were both spectators at the race.
